I agree zero emotions doesn't necessarily mean heartless, why do I say so:

When you catch feelings for someone because you want to have a relationship with that person and later that person not interested in a thing leaving you devastated is such a problem.

Look here; since it's easier and less delicate to develop feelings than lose it, it's preferable to run it backwards. Connect with the person you want without catching feelings( catch small tho) agree with each other till the necessary point of falling in love(no matter who falls first) release your romantic emotions towards each other and you'll realise catching feelings for each other seems automatic.
